What happens when the lead robot in a swarm of robots stops working?
What happens to the birds that fly in a formation when the lead bird falls off?
Yesterday, Prof James McLurkin, demonstrated a swarm of 12 robots, led by a single robot controlled by him. The demo had many interesting features, robots following each other, forming groups based on their color, and more…
To me, the magic emerged when the lead robot was taken out of the equation. For about 4 seconds, there was chaos among the robots. Then one robot self-selected itself as the leader, in this instance programmed as the next highest in numerical order. The pack then continued on its merry way.
What was important is that 30 young budding thinkers at CTWorkshop had an opportunity to witness the same, carry these robots reverently, and interact with Prof James.
